  • Flood Death Toll Tops 900 in Nepal and Tibet as Searches Focus on Power Plant Tunnels

Flood Death Toll Tops 900 in Nepal and Tibet as Searches Focus on Power Plant Tunnels

Rescue teams drawn from several countries worked alongside Nepali forces on August 31, 2026, to reach workers believed trapped in tunnels at more than a dozen hydropower installations flooded by the disaster. Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet, Nepal’s army spokesman, said «We are working in search and rescue of the stranded people from hills, settlements and river areas.» The combined toll from the event that struck rivers feeding the plants now stands above 900 dead with thousands unaccounted for according to updated official counts.

Nepal’s disaster agency placed the toll at 903 deaths within its borders together with 4,247 missing including 592 foreigners. Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing as of the previous day with 261 of those foreigners including more than 100 Nepalis. Those figures grew as operators of remote projects supplied further details on personnel who had not been located.

Mohan Kumar Dangi, president of the Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal, reported that at least 12 hydropower projects sustained damage across Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts where approximately 900 people were missing from the sites. At the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district at least 576 people remained unaccounted for with around 300 thought to be inside the main tunnel. Operations to reach them continued despite persistent rainfall in the valleys.

Workers clearing mud from a power station in Dhading told the Associated Press that the facility provides electricity to more than 20,000 residents in the surrounding area and voiced hope that reconstruction would occur away from the river. Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist at the University of Graz currently based in Dhaka, described conditions inside the affected structures. «The tunnels are built to access hydropower infrastructure and to divert water — an essential step to generate energy. These tunnels are big enough to drive trucks through. There is enough place for people to take refuge safely inside and from what we understand they have managed to get oxygen to some of those stuck inside and are trying to rescue them now. It’s a race for time though as people need food and water,» Steiner said.

The floods cut 431 megawatts of generating capacity or more than 12 percent of Nepal’s total according to the Nepal Electricity Authority.[[1]](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/29/business/nepal-hydropower-flood.html) A New York Times dispatch noted that counting projects under construction would roughly double the capacity taken offline. Nepal expanded its installed hydropower from roughly 3,000 megawatts in 2024 to more than 4,000 and maintains a target of 28,500 megawatts by 2035.

Scientists attributed the trigger to a glacial collapse whose likelihood has risen as the Himalayas warm at an accelerated rate relative to other regions, a finding reported by the Associated Press.[[2]](https://apnews.com/article/nepal-flash-floods-glaciers-climate-change-d8c11c2215ea0792e3612bf791e4299f) A comparable flood struck the identical river corridor in July 2025 inflicting parallel damage to hydropower assets and trade routes. Studies including one published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have estimated that glacial lake outburst floods in the eastern Himalayas can produce peak discharges exceeding 15,000 cubic meters per second.

  • Nepal Sounds Fresh Flood Alerts as Bhotekoshi Disaster Death Toll Tops 750

Nepal Sounds Fresh Flood Alerts as Bhotekoshi Disaster Death Toll Tops 750

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority issued fresh flood warnings throughout Sunday morning after Chinese officials notified their counterparts of increased upstream flows into the Bhotekoshi River. The authority’s chief executive Dharam Raj Uprety told the Associated Press that the alerts prompted text messages to residents in affected districts even as rescue teams cleared a key highway linking Kathmandu to hard-hit zones. Uprety said crews continued operations despite the risks, with the latest notices coming days after catastrophic flooding struck on Aug. 26.

Residents in the town of Galchhi moved to higher ground on a nearby bridge to watch the swollen river rush past, pointing out massive boulders carried downstream during the initial surge. Entire homes, vehicles and farm tractors protruded from thick gray-brown sediment that had buried villages in the worst-affected areas, according to an AP dispatch from the scene. Rice terraces along the riverbanks showed fresh landslide scars where sections of fields had collapsed into the water.

Large concrete bridges and smaller suspension crossings were destroyed in the floods, isolating communities on opposite sides of the river and complicating access for relief efforts. Homes and businesses that avoided total destruction still lacked electricity on Aug. 30, with twisted power poles and lines tangled in the mud. Local resident Govind Shrestha said, «Sometimes they say a flood is coming, then we have to run again to higher ground, even at night. There is also rain. It’s really difficult for me. I have a 72-year-old father and 70-year-old mom. I must carry them and I am exhausted. It’s going on like this for those who are still alive.» Sattan Singh Tamang, 47, who was near a bridge when the floods hit, added, «Those who are there are now stuck there. Those who are here are stuck here. It’s going to be very difficult.»

Nepal’s disaster agency placed the domestic death toll at 734 with 2,498 people missing, while Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths and 546 missing on their side of the border. The combined figures reached 750 dead and over 3,000 missing, incorporating more than 100 Nepalis and citizens from a dozen other countries among those unaccounted for in Tibet. A Reuters report on Aug. 30 noted that the Red Cross estimates more than 90,000 people have been affected by the disaster overall.

The floods were triggered by a collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, sending a massive surge of mud, debris and water down the Lhende, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, multiple outlets including India Today and The Himalayan Times reported in updates from Aug. 28-30. Rescue operations have focused on hundreds believed trapped in hydropower project tunnels, with Nepal deploying nearly 20,000 security personnel and using helicopters for repeated evacuation and supply sorties. More than 8,000 people have been rescued so far according to NDRRMA updates, though renewed rain and rising river levels have hampered efforts in districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan.

Scientists have linked the growing frequency of such Himalayan events to climate change, which has accelerated glacier melt in the region at rates that have doubled since 2000, an Associated Press assessment of the disaster found. Studies cited in Reuters coverage indicate the Himalayas are warming faster than many other parts of the world, raising the potential for glacial lake outburst floods and similar catastrophes. A separate World Weather Attribution analysis of prior Nepal extreme rainfall events showed human-induced climate change made heavy precipitation about 10 percent more intense and 70 percent more likely in comparable cases.

  • Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 623 With More Than 1,100 Still Missing

Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 623 With More Than 1,100 Still Missing

Nepal Police on Saturday put the death toll from the floods at 623 after recovering 616 bodies from various locations. The worst-hit districts were Chitwan with 233 recoveries and Nawalparasi East with 158, according to the force’s breakdown. Operations have also located victims in Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa following overflows of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, with some remains carried to the Indian border.

More than 1,100 people are missing in total, the police assessment found, including 638 within Nepal of whom 511 are foreigners. In neighboring China, seven people were killed and 554 remain missing, Xinhua news agency reported. The Nepal Police added that 27 of its officers are among those unaccounted for in the disaster that struck earlier this week.

Rescue teams have saved or treated 2,301 people, most of them from Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, police records show. A total of 4,811 officers have been mobilized for the effort across the affected regions. The operation continues as searchers focus on rivers and downstream communities.

Experts attributed the sudden flooding to a glacial collapse in the Himalayan region, which caused a rapid rise in river levels.[[1]](https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nepal-flash-floods-7262dac22e31258955efa5c28c8fe917) The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development noted that water levels on the Trishuli river increased by up to 9 meters in 30 minutes. This disaster follows a similar event in the same area last year that also claimed lives.

The incident has affected tourism, with many of the missing foreigners being Indian pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash in Tibet, according to a tourism board spokesperson cited by AP News. Nepal’s disaster management history shows floods and landslides regularly cause significant casualties, with a 2024 event resulting in at least 250 deaths per government reports. Infrastructure such as roads and bridges has also sustained damage in the current floods.

Authorities in Nepal have declared multiple municipalities as crisis zones and distributed funds for emergency response, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority stated in prior assessments of similar events. The police continue to deploy personnel while monitoring potential secondary hazards from barrier lakes. Updated figures from the affected districts are expected in the coming days as recovery work proceeds.

  • Nepal Relocates Rescuers After Chinese Alert on Tibet Barrier Lake Breach Risk

Nepal Relocates Rescuers After Chinese Alert on Tibet Barrier Lake Breach Risk

Nepal Police urged rescuers and the public to remain alert and take precautions by moving away from riverbanks amid fears of a second flash flood, officials said. Rasuwa district administrators received information from China about a breach in a barrier lake created by the earlier deluge but noted that Nepalese teams had not yet verified the report independently, according to the Arab Times. The alert follows similar notices issued a day earlier by disaster authorities in both countries as the region continued to grapple with the aftermath of Wednesday’s disaster.

A glacier collapse sent rock, ice, mud and debris cascading through Himalayan river systems on August 26, sweeping away villages, roads and infrastructure along a key route between Kathmandu and Lhasa, Reuters reported. The floods killed at least 359 people in Nepal with nearly 1,000 others missing, according to the news agency, while Chinese authorities reported three deaths and more than 500 missing in Tibet. Many of those unaccounted for were foreign tourists and pilgrims, Al Jazeera data shows.

Chinese state media reported that the barrier lake had accumulated roughly 2.5 million cubic metres of water and could receive an additional 3 million cubic metres over the next three days because of continued rainfall. The Ministry of Water Resources placed the risk of a breach as high with peak flows possible around September 1, citing forecasts that equate the additional volume to about 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Hydrology department researcher Zhu Jinfeng told state broadcaster CCTV, «The volume of water is continuing to increase, and so is the risk.»

Beijing halted all rescue operations on its side of the border and ordered personnel and vehicles to withdraw to safe areas to avoid threats from potential lake failure, mountain collapses or avalanches, CCTV reported. More than 1,000 people including stranded tourists have been evacuated from the Gyirong port area, Chinese officials said. Nepalese teams continued searches in affected districts but heeded their own government’s calls to avoid low-lying zones near the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.

Rescue worker Pawan Koirala said he moved his 13-member team away from the riverbed immediately after the latest warning. «We are here for rescue and don’t want to be near the danger zone,» he told Reuters. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has deployed more than 5,000 army and police personnel across the affected valleys, according to agency spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet, while helicopters have dropped tents, food and medicine supplied by India.

The disaster zone lies along a popular corridor used by trekkers and pilgrims, which accounts for the large proportion of foreigners among the missing, a Reuters assessment found. Nepal’s disaster authority separately warned residents of lower banks along the Narayani river system to exercise caution and stay in safe locations until the threat subsides. Chinese engineers have begun flood simulations and monitoring to prepare for any breach, state media added.

Crews Reach 27 Percent Containment on Hawk Fire That Burned 32 Homes Near Reno

Authorities reported that the Hawk Fire held steady at roughly 23 square miles with no additional growth as containment increased to 27 percent, according to an afternoon briefing covered by the Associated Press on August 25. US Forest Service District Ranger Matt Zumstein stated, «We are making progress.» The number of residents under evacuation orders or warnings dropped to approximately 63,000 from a weekend high above 90,000, briefing officials added.

Firefighters continued to contend with hot temperatures, low humidity and the risk of wind gusts that could drive flames into newly developed neighborhoods of Nevada’s second-largest city, the authorities warned. At least 32 homes have burned and six others sustained damage, though those totals are expected to increase once assessment teams examine the affected areas, according to the briefing. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said the fire’s swift advance had been alarming, stating, «It lit up these areas like nothing I’ve seen before. It took your breath away, in the worst way.»

Washoe County schools remained closed Monday to facilitate emergency operations and clear roads for crews, Nevada officials said after the governor declared a state of emergency in the county. The declaration included mobilization of the National Guard to support aerial firefighting and safeguard evacuated neighborhoods northwest of downtown Reno. At a roadblock one resident expressed irritation by yelling, «There’s no fire here! Why are the National Guard here?» while Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam responded that the hazard had not passed, stating, «It just takes that little breeze and one ember.»

The Hawk Fire, which ignited on August 22 near the California state line and surged Sunday, represents the third major wildfire in the rugged terrain north of Reno within the past two weeks, all linked to human activity, fire officials reported. Authorities have yet to specify whether the cause was intentional or accidental. The burned zone consisted primarily of sagebrush and grass.

National Interagency Fire Center figures show more than 50,000 wildfires have occurred nationwide year-to-date, burning millions of acres across the country.[[1]](https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/statistics) In Nevada, human-caused fires have outnumbered lightning-induced incidents this season by a wide margin, with state reports placing them at 373 compared with 117, according to regional fire data.[[2]](https://www.facebook.com/wlkynews/posts/officials-say-a-fast-growing-wildfire-in-reno-nevada-was-caused-by-humans-full-s/1065597805844154/) A National Park Service assessment found humans ignite about 85 percent of wildfires annually in the United States.[[3]](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-wildfires)

Scientific analysis has tied expanding wildfire activity across the western United States, including the Sierra Nevada, to climate factors, with more than half the increase in burned forest area since 1985 attributed to human-caused climate change, according to a University of California study.[[4]](https://cdm17192.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/api/collection/p17192coll1/id/1043/download) Reno, home to approximately 280,000 residents, functions as a casino center and primary gateway to Lake Tahoe, North America’s largest alpine lake that has encountered its own wildfire pressures in recent years. The Hawk Fire originated in an area close to Somersett, where dozers were deployed to establish fuel breaks between the flames and residential zones, emergency updates indicated.
