Nepal Police on Saturday put the death toll from the floods at 623 after recovering 616 bodies from various locations. The worst-hit districts were Chitwan with 233 recoveries and Nawalparasi East with 158, according to the force’s breakdown. Operations have also located victims in Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa following overflows of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, with some remains carried to the Indian border.
More than 1,100 people are missing in total, the police assessment found, including 638 within Nepal of whom 511 are foreigners. In neighboring China, seven people were killed and 554 remain missing, Xinhua news agency reported. The Nepal Police added that 27 of its officers are among those unaccounted for in the disaster that struck earlier this week.
Rescue teams have saved or treated 2,301 people, most of them from Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, police records show. A total of 4,811 officers have been mobilized for the effort across the affected regions. The operation continues as searchers focus on rivers and downstream communities.
Experts attributed the sudden flooding to a glacial collapse in the Himalayan region, which caused a rapid rise in river levels.[[1]](https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nepal-flash-floods-7262dac22e31258955efa5c28c8fe917) The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development noted that water levels on the Trishuli river increased by up to 9 meters in 30 minutes. This disaster follows a similar event in the same area last year that also claimed lives.
The incident has affected tourism, with many of the missing foreigners being Indian pilgrims heading to Mount Kailash in Tibet, according to a tourism board spokesperson cited by AP News. Nepal’s disaster management history shows floods and landslides regularly cause significant casualties, with a 2024 event resulting in at least 250 deaths per government reports. Infrastructure such as roads and bridges has also sustained damage in the current floods.
Authorities in Nepal have declared multiple municipalities as crisis zones and distributed funds for emergency response, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority stated in prior assessments of similar events. The police continue to deploy personnel while monitoring potential secondary hazards from barrier lakes. Updated figures from the affected districts are expected in the coming days as recovery work proceeds.
