  • Iranian Teams and Volunteers Clean Oil Slicks on Qeshm as Stricken Tanker Leaks Off Oman

Iranian Teams and Volunteers Clean Oil Slicks on Qeshm as Stricken Tanker Leaks Off Oman

Iranian news agency ISNA reported Thursday that oil pollution had spread along the southern coasts of Iran’s Qeshm and Hengam islands, covering an estimated 32,000 square metres. Several cleanup teams, including a large number of local volunteers, have been working in the affected areas since Wednesday. Authorities are investigating the source of the pollution in coordination with Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization and Qeshm port authorities, the Arab Times reported.

British maritime security firm Ambrey said salvage vessels were heading to the area to support efforts to recover the Caroline Bezengi tanker off the coast of Oman. The tanker has been leaking crude oil, creating a large slick that has reached parts of Oman’s mainland. The Omani government said on August 10 that the resulting slick covered almost 400 square kilometres, according to Reuters.

Al Jazeera reported that the Caroline Bezengi is believed to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet that Moscow uses to circumvent Western sanctions on its oil exports. The tanker loaded at Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in April and passed through the Suez Canal at the end of May, ship-tracking data cited by Reuters shows. It has been stranded since an explosion in early June near Oman’s al-Qibliyyah Island, an AFP investigation found.

Reuters reported that although the incident had been ongoing for more than two months, there had not been any sign of vessel activity at the site to suggest a response to stabilize the tanker and remove the remaining oil cargo. SkyTruth CEO John Amos said that was a concern. Oil slicks have also spread to Qeshm’s mangrove forests near Naghasheh village, Iran Wire reported on August 12.

Yousef Opera, head of the Qeshm Department of Natural Resources and Watershed Management, noted that authorities are currently assessing the extent of contamination within the Hara forests. Responsible agencies have initiated cleanup operations and containment measures, the publication said. The Qeshm prosecutor ordered the Ports and Maritime Organization and municipal authorities to clear the oil slicks from the coastline.

The United Nations shipping agency has stated that some oil from the tanker Caroline Bezengi is reaching Oman’s mainland. Videos circulating on social media and satellite imagery have captured the spill south of Qeshm and Hengam islands. Iranian authorities have launched urgent cleanup operations along the southeastern coast in response to the contamination, according to reports from Bloomberg.

  • Spanish Authorities Deploy Thousands of Officers for Total Solar Eclipse Amid Active Wildfires

Spanish Authorities Deploy Thousands of Officers for Total Solar Eclipse Amid Active Wildfires

The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will cross northern Spain from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean coast along with slivers of Greenland, Iceland and Portugal, according to the European Space Agency, offering some of mainland Europe’s best viewing opportunities in a path that includes cities such as A Coruña, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma. Totality will last up to two minutes and 18 seconds at its maximum near Iceland but between one and two minutes across Spanish locations, ESA data show, with the event beginning around sunset as the sun, moon and Earth align. Spanish authorities estimated the celestial event could attract at least an additional 500,000 visitors to sparsely populated interior areas often called Empty Spain, prompting a major public safety operation that combines astronomy outreach with wildfire vigilance.

Spain’s Interior Ministry set up 350 official viewing sites while limiting or restricting access to another 123 locations due to environmental conditions or potential evacuation obstacles in case of fire, the ministry reported. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated, «High temperatures, the accumulated dryness of vegetation, and the intense pressure on natural areas due to projected travel necessitate extreme preventive measures.» The ministry’s campaign urged visitors to avoid lighting fires, littering or parking near dry vegetation as officials sought to prevent any spark from igniting new blazes during the influx.

More than 33,500 law enforcement officers were deployed to observation areas and access points to enforce the restrictions and support safe viewing, according to the Interior Ministry. The measures arrive only weeks after the most destructive wildfire in Spanish history forced the evacuation of tens of thousands and several smaller fires remained active in other parts of the country. World Weather Attribution scientists determined that climate change made the fire-prone conditions at least 20 times more likely in central Spain during the July outbreak.

The July 2026 wildfires burned around 140,000 hectares across central and eastern Spain, with the Ávila fire alone consuming 44,000 hectares and ranking as the largest on record, a World Weather Attribution assessment found. Those blazes displaced more than 80,000 people and led to nearly 100,000 others being advised to stay indoors because of poor air quality, the group reported. The fires followed an unusually wet January that boosted vegetation growth followed by record summer heat and drought that dried fuels to highly flammable levels.

Much of Spain remained on alert for temperatures climbing above 35 degrees Celsius with bone-dry vegetation, the national weather agency AEMET forecast across northwest to southeastern areas that overlap many eclipse viewing zones. AEMET data placed this summer as the hottest on record in Spain, exacerbating the fire risk after the earlier blazes. The combination of extreme heat, drought and high fuel loads has become more common as Europe warms faster than the global average, according to climate analyses.

Specialized eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 standards are required for safe viewing even when only a sliver of the sun remains visible, Telmo Fernández Castro, director of the Madrid Planetarium, said. «To look at the sun, you must always use proper protection, and the most suitable protection is eclipse glasses,» Fernández Castro stated. The glasses employ special filters to block harmful solar radiation that can damage eyes without immediate sensation of pain, while authorities also advised against using cameras, binoculars or telescopes without proper solar filters during partial phases.

  • Guatemala Holds 1,700 in Shelters During Critical Phase of Fuego Volcano Eruption

Guatemala Holds 1,700 in Shelters During Critical Phase of Fuego Volcano Eruption

Guatemala’s National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction reported that approximately 1,700 people who fled villages near the Fuego volcano remained in shelters on August 5 as officials maintained evacuations until conditions improve. The agency raised the alert level to red for Sacatepéquez, Escuintla and Chimaltenango, where ashfall has affected about 29,000 residents and forced school closures. CONRED warned that the next 72 hours would prove critical, with incoming rain expected to increase the risk of additional mudflows extending up to 7 kilometers from the summit.

CONRED executive secretary Claudinne Ogaldes stated that the mudflows had not reached any villages and that no structures had been damaged or placed at immediate risk. She recommended that residents in the three municipalities cover their water deposits and use face masks as protection from the ash. The guidance followed an eruption that began the previous morning, producing clouds of gas and ash along with lava and pyroclastic flows down the slopes.

Additional mud and ash emissions continued into the second day, CONRED reported, with around 250 people evacuated from El Porvenir and the hamlet of Las Lajitas. Ash spread to nearby towns, leading authorities to close National Route 14, the major highway passing close to the volcano. The Education Ministry suspended classes in affected communities as part of the safety measures.

Data from the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program show that Fuego has maintained near-continuous eruptive phases since January 2002, establishing it as one of Central America’s most active volcanoes. Its June 2018 paroxysm, the most powerful since 1974, killed at least 165 people with hundreds more missing while affecting more than 1.7 million residents across three central departments and destroying one village entirely, according to World Vision International. That event highlighted the persistent hazards around the 3,763-meter stratovolcano located 16 kilometers west of Antigua.

Guatemala’s Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología recorded frequent explosions and ash plumes rising over a kilometer during eruptive activity earlier in 2026. Preventive evacuations were also ordered during an eruption the previous year, CONRED figures indicate. Officials have continued monitoring the volcano with seismic networks and webcams to track developments in real time.

CONRED has emphasised that the current evacuations focus on communities in drainages with a history of impacts from pyroclastic flows and lahars at Fuego. The agency’s tallies confirm that evacuations will persist until volcanic activity subsides and risks diminish. Residents have been instructed to follow all updates from authorities amid the evolving situation.

  • Games Workshop Launches 11th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 With Armageddon Boxed Set

Games Workshop Launches 11th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 With Armageddon Boxed Set

Games Workshop has announced a new edition of Warhammer 40,000 centered on the Armageddon conflict, the company said this week. The launch features a boxed set with new miniatures for Space Marines and Orks, core rules, and campaign decks. It marks the start of the 11th edition of the popular tabletop wargame.

The boxed set contains the story of the raging war for Armageddon, core rules for games of Warhammer 40,000, a Chapter Approved Mission Deck and a Dominatus Campaign Deck, according to the official website. It also includes 17 datasheet cards for the models from both factions along with a transfer sheet for adding icons and symbols. These components enable both matched play and narrative campaigns in the new ruleset.

Space Marine units in the box include a Captain with Relic Shield, Chaplain with Jump Pack, Librarian, Ancient, 10 Intercessors, five Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, three Eradicators with Heavy Bolters and one Land Speeder. The Ork forces comprise a Warboss, Bigboss, Bannernob, Painboy and Grot Orderly, Weirdboy, 20 Boyz, 10 Gretchin, a Wartrakk and Big Mek Dakkarig. All listed miniatures are new sculpts developed for this edition, the announcement detailed.

A cinematic trailer released with the reveal shows Orks clashing against defenders on Armageddon with the lines «Armageddon burns. The green tide will not be stemmed.» It ends with the franchise tagline «There is only war.» The new edition was previewed at Adepticon 2026 in March, according to Warhammer Community reports.

Warhammer 40,000 first launched in 1987 and has since become a cornerstone of the miniature wargaming hobby. Games Workshop expects core revenue to increase 6.8 percent to £603 million in 2026, an S&P Global assessment found. The global board games market was valued at USD 15.83 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow to USD 17.45 billion in 2026, Fortune Business Insights data shows.

The Armageddon setting draws on established lore from prior conflicts in the Warhammer 40,000 universe that have appeared in novels, games and earlier model ranges. The included campaign deck allows players to engage with this narrative through linked scenarios. Additional supporting releases are expected alongside the boxed set later in 2026, community coverage indicated.

The launch box provides complete starting forces for both sides ready for immediate play under the updated rules. Datasheet cards supply specific unit profiles while the mission deck offers varied objectives and deployments. Pre-orders for the set are scheduled to open in early June ahead of a mid-June release, according to multiple Warhammer Community articles.

  • UNFCCC Chief Calls for Rapid Clean Energy Shift as Heatwaves Strike Europe and Asia

UNFCCC Chief Calls for Rapid Clean Energy Shift as Heatwaves Strike Europe and Asia

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change has called for an accelerated transition to clean energy and reduced reliance on fossil fuels, its executive secretary said on May 27 as record heatwaves affected Europe and parts of Asia. Simon Stiell described the latest extreme temperatures as a stark reminder of the growing human and economic costs of the climate crisis, which he attributed to continued dependence on coal, oil and gas coupled with deforestation. India recorded temperatures of 47.4 degrees Celsius on Monday while the United Kingdom and France experienced unusually high readings for the season, according to the Qatar News Agency report on the UNFCCC statement.

Stiell’s statement, as carried by the Qatar News Agency, warned that human-driven climate change is worsening such heatwaves across multiple regions. The UNFCCC executive secretary noted that events in Europe and India illustrate the intensifying impacts already under way. Several European countries have logged temperatures well above seasonal norms in recent days, extending a pattern of extreme spring weather that has also gripped parts of Asia.

The UK Met Office and Météo France both reported record May temperatures during the current heat dome, with readings exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in parts of the United Kingdom and France shattering previous benchmarks by as much as two degrees. European Space Agency satellite data released this week showed surface temperatures consistent with midsummer conditions in late May across Western Europe. Similar unseasonal heat has affected countries including China, Pakistan and South Korea, according to analysis by the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre published on May 27.

International Energy Agency figures show that renewable power capacity is on track to more than double globally by 2030, with growth between 2025 and 2030 exceeding that of the prior five-year period in over 80 percent of countries. Annual additions reached a record 560 gigawatts in 2023, and renewables overtook coal as the top electricity source in the first half of 2025, IRENA data indicate. Despite this progress, the agency has stressed that the pace must increase further to align with international climate commitments made at COP28 to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

A joint IRENA and Climate Policy Initiative assessment found that annual investments in renewable power must nearly double to $1.4 trillion between 2025 and 2030 to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius pathway, while energy efficiency investment needs to rise 7.5 times to $2.6 trillion yearly. Current financing gaps remain substantial in heating, transport and other end-use sectors beyond electricity generation. China, Europe and the United States accounted for the majority of recent solar and wind deployment, with China meeting its 2030 solar target six years early, according to IEA tracking.

Stiell has repeatedly highlighted in 2026 statements that fossil fuel volatility undermines national security while renewables offer a faster, cheaper alternative insulated from geopolitical risks. In earlier remarks this year, the UNFCCC executive secretary pointed to the irony that fossil fuel proponents are inadvertently accelerating the renewables boom through market dynamics. The May 27 statement builds on this theme by tying immediate weather extremes to the longer-term need for systemic energy transformation across economies.
