Erdogan Visits Saudi Arabia as Trilateral Defense Pact with Pakistan Nears Signing

Arab Times reported that the defense agreement will be formalized in Jeddah on Friday. The Kuwait-based publication stated that the signing coincides with Erdogan’s working visit to Saudi Arabia where he is scheduled to hold talks with Mohammed bin Salman and Shehbaz Sharif. The newspaper tied the development to heightened regional diplomatic activities in which the three countries are already engaged. Security sources provided the details of the planned ceremony to the outlet.

Pakistan has participated in mediation aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict according to Arab Times. Türkiye has maintained an active role in international efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza the publication added. These parallel diplomatic tracks form the immediate context for the defense agreement among the three nations. The report did not disclose additional objectives for the pact itself.

The trilateral initiative builds directly on the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in September 2025 a Wikipedia entry on the pact records. Bloomberg reported in January 2026 that Turkey had shown strong interest in joining the bilateral framework with talks described as advanced. Pakistan’s Minister for Defence Production told Reuters in a January 15 2026 interview that a draft trilateral agreement had been prepared after nearly a year of negotiations and shared with all parties.

A Chatham House assessment dated January 30 2026 characterized Turkey’s engagement as part of an opportunistic hedging strategy. The London think tank noted that the arrangement would not necessarily enhance Turkey’s defense under its NATO membership but could deliver other strategic benefits. The analysis highlighted how recent regional tensions had accelerated security coordination among Saudi Arabia Pakistan and Türkiye.

Defense cooperation among the three countries has included joint military exercises training programs and equipment transfers for years a Global Asia magazine feature from 2026 outlined. Saudi Arabia has drawn on Pakistani operational expertise and manpower while Türkiye has expanded defense industry links with both partners the article detailed. The impending agreement is expected to institutionalize and broaden these longstanding ties the publication indicated.

  • Iraqi Military Activates Plan to Prevent Iran-Backed Strikes on Saudi Targets

Iraqi Military Activates Plan to Prevent Iran-Backed Strikes on Saudi Targets

Iraq’s military has begun carrying out a security plan aimed at stopping attacks from its soil against neighboring countries, spokesman Sabah Al-Numan said on Thursday. «We will not allow any attack from inside Iraq targeting any neighboring country,» Al-Numan told Dijlah TV. His statement followed a senior Saudi official’s disclosure to Reuters that Iraqi militias were working with Yemen’s Houthis on strikes directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Saudi Arabia separately elevated its security posture in response to the threat, according to multiple reports.

CNN reported that Saudi officials received intelligence suggesting coordinated attacks could target energy facilities, ports and airports in the very near future. A Saudi official cited by the network said authorities had tracked meetings that brought together Iraqi militia members, Houthi fighters and personnel from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, along with movements of drones and missiles. The official added that Saudi Arabia would take all necessary measures to respond while it continued efforts to reduce regional tensions. Intelligence underlying the alerts was shared among Saudi Arabia, the United States and regional partners.

The warnings arrive weeks after U.S. and Saudi forces conducted strikes on Iran-backed militia sites in eastern Iraq. U.S. Central Command stated that the July 28 operation hit logistics and weapons facilities directed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in response to more than 30 IRGC-ordered drone attacks within the prior 72 hours. Central Command data placed the number of attempted attacks by Iran-aligned militias on U.S. citizens and facilities in Iraq at more than 600 between February and April 2026.

Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces, which include many Iran-backed Shia militias, reported at least 20 members killed in the late-July strikes, according to a BBC account. Saudi Arabia had blamed similar groups for launching drones against its oil infrastructure on July 27, Reuters reported at the time. Those incidents prompted the joint U.S.-Saudi action and highlighted ongoing friction over the use of Iraqi territory for cross-border operations.

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Long War Journal reported on August 4 that Baghdad faces renewed pressure from regional countries to restrain its Iran-backed militias after the groups expanded attacks beyond Iraq’s borders. A Wikipedia compilation of the Iran-Saudi Arabia proxy war traces such activity to the power vacuum that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and the subsequent rise of Shia militias supported by Tehran. Iraqi officials have repeatedly stated they do not want their country to serve as a launchpad for strikes against neighbors.

Saudi officials have maintained contact with Iraqi counterparts to address the militia issue while pursuing de-escalation across the region. The latest intelligence reports have not been matched by any confirmed attacks as of August 7. Iraqi authorities continue to enforce the newly activated security measures at key border areas and internal sites linked to militia activity.

  • Thai Police Identify 14-Year-Old Student as Shooter in Nonthaburi School Attack That Left Two Dead

Thai Police Identify 14-Year-Old Student as Shooter in Nonthaburi School Attack That Left Two Dead

Thai police reported that the 14-year-old boy, a student at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, opened fire on teachers and fellow pupils before taking his own life. The youth carried out the attack using a 9mm handgun that belonged to his grandfather, who worked as a teacher at the school, Lt. Col. Dechrapee Kongdee, the Nonthaburi Provincial Police Commander, confirmed to reporters. Authorities have not yet disclosed any potential motive, though an investigation is underway to determine how the minor gained access to the weapon and whether any prior warnings had been overlooked.

The Nonthaburi Provincial Police Commander’s office put the death toll at two, in addition to the shooter, while early assessments indicated that as many as 20 people sustained injuries in the incident. Among the casualties were at least one teacher killed and several students and staff members wounded, with some reports specifying three students and one additional teacher among those hurt. Police data clarified that two of the injured remained in critical condition hours after the shooting, as medical teams worked to stabilise victims at nearby hospitals.

Debsirin Nonthaburi School was placed on lockdown immediately after the gunfire began on Friday morning, with students and staff evacuated under police supervision. The commander’s briefing noted that the perpetrator was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted wound. Officials have withheld further specifics on the timeline pending forensic analysis and witness interviews, according to a statement distributed by the provincial police.

The event marks the latest school-related shooting in Thailand, where authorities detained an 18-year-old gunman in February 2026 after he wounded a student and a teacher at a school in the southern Hat Yai district, a Reuters dispatch indicated. Police records from that incident confirmed the suspect was arrested without further casualties after taking hostages, highlighting recurring challenges in securing educational facilities across urban and provincial areas.

Thailand experienced one of its deadliest attacks in 2020 when a soldier carried out the Nakhon Ratchasima shootings, killing 29 people before security forces ended the rampage, according to government tallies. A separate 2022 assault on a childcare centre in the northeast left 37 dead, most of them children, as documented in official reviews of national security incidents. These precedents have prompted repeated calls from lawmakers for enhanced gun control measures in a country where civilian firearm ownership rates rank among the highest in Southeast Asia.

The education ministry is coordinating with local authorities to provide psychological support to survivors and review security protocols at schools nationwide, a ministry spokesperson stated. No decision has been announced on potential charges against the gunman’s family members regarding firearm storage. Police continue to gather evidence from the site while urging anyone with additional information to come forward.

  • Saudi Coalition Reports 11 Civilians Injured in Houthi Strike on Najran

Saudi Coalition Reports 11 Civilians Injured in Houthi Strike on Najran

The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen reported that Houthi militants injured 11 civilians when they targeted the Najran region of Saudi Arabia on August 6. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said the assault involved indiscriminate projectiles directed at civilian facilities in the border area. Al-Maliki described the strike as a deliberate assault on civilians and civilian infrastructure that violated international humanitarian law. A Reuters report issued hours after the coalition briefing confirmed the details of the incident and noted that it formed part of a pattern of recent escalations.

The victims included seven Saudi nationals, among them a woman and the four-year-old child who sustained second-degree burns, according to the coalition’s breakdown. One Yemeni, two Egyptians and one Pakistani national accounted for the remaining injured parties, Al-Maliki stated. Medical authorities moved swiftly to treat those wounded in the Thursday attack, the spokesman added.

Al-Maliki told reporters that the Houthi militia had once again shown disregard for civilian lives through its choice of targets. The coalition would continue taking all necessary measures to protect civilians, he said in the August 7 briefing covered by Reuters. This assessment aligned with earlier coalition statements on similar cross-border incidents.

The latest strike followed a Houthi claim of responsibility for an attack on a target at Najran airport three days earlier, a Reuters dispatch from August 4 reported. The Iran-aligned group asserted that its action responded to alleged Saudi drone incursions into northwestern Yemeni airspace. Such exchanges have increased in frequency since the expiration of a nationwide truce in late 2022.

The Saudi-led intervention in Yemen began in March 2015 to restore the internationally recognized government, according to a 2016 Reuters special report on the border conflict. That investigation found that Houthi attacks along the frontier had killed and injured around 400 Saudi civilians by April 2016 while also claiming the lives of roughly 400 Saudi soldiers and border guards. The United Nations Development Programme estimated that the wider Yemen war had caused 377,000 deaths from direct and indirect causes by the end of 2021.

Coalition airstrikes alone killed or maimed more than 19,200 civilians including over 2,300 children between March 2015 and April 2022, a Global Rights to Peace assessment released in July 2026 placed the figure at that level. The Yemen Data Project has continued to track civilian harm from multiple parties since the ceasefire lapsed, recording at least 1,742 civilian deaths in subsequent fighting. The August 6 incident in Najran adds to this extended record of cross-border violence that has affected communities on both sides of the frontier for more than a decade.

  • Iranian Lawmaker Conditions Strait of Hormuz Reopening on US Regional Withdrawal

Iranian Lawmaker Conditions Strait of Hormuz Reopening on US Regional Withdrawal

Arab Times reported that Behnam Saeedi made the comments on Thursday amid ongoing regional tensions. The secretary of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee emphasized Iran’s sole authority over the waterway. He limited the scope of current talks with Oman to shipping route coordination only.

«The Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the naval blockade is lifted, the United States leaves the region and the threats end,» Saeedi said according to the Arab Times article. The lawmaker characterized the strait as one of Iran’s premier strategic assets. Saeedi further asserted that its value as a deterrent surpasses even that of an atomic bomb.

The New York Times reported earlier this week that Iran and Oman have advanced discussions on potential temporary reopening of the passage. Those negotiations have centered on establishing agreed geographical coordinates for safe transit. Saeedi’s exclusion from the process highlights internal divisions within Iranian decision-making circles on the matter.

US Energy Information Administration figures show that oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz averaged 20.9 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025. The volume accounted for roughly 20 percent of global petroleum liquids consumption at the time. Such data underscores the waterway’s critical role in international energy supply chains.

A Reuters dispatch from June 2025 indicated that Saeedi has voiced comparable positions in prior months. On that occasion he identified closure of the strait as one of several response options available to Iran against perceived aggression. The lawmaker has additionally pointed to potential collaboration with Houthi forces to impede shipping through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as another leverage point.

According to Arab Times, Saeedi maintains that the strait operates under Tehran’s exclusive supervision. This perspective reinforces Iran’s longstanding claim to sovereign control over the chokepoint. The comments surface against a backdrop of heightened security concerns for commercial vessels navigating the Persian Gulf.
