Russia Beats US in Moscow Hockey Match Aimed at Improving Bilateral Ties

The Financial Times reported on July 2 that Russia secured the win in the inaugural pro-am match at the Kristall ice palace within Moscow’s Luzhniki Olympic Complex. AmCham Russia President Robert Agee announced plans for the event in June during the St Petersburg International Economic Forum stating it would coincide with the 250th anniversary of US independence on July 4. Agee added that the game could help rebuild trust and support broader efforts by the two presidents to improve business ties according to a video transcript from the event.

The Moscow Times reported in June that the match featured a combination of professional and amateur players with NHL standout Alexander Ovechkin participating. Vyacheslav Fetisov a former NHL player and State Duma deputy captained the Russian side while Alexander Yakushev a two-time Soviet Olympic gold medalist served as head coach. Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretiak dropped the ceremonial first puck the newspaper added.

According to the Kremlin readout from March 2025 Trump supported Putin’s proposal during a phone call for a series of hockey matches between Russian and American players from the NHL and KHL. The Athletic reported at the time that the NHL stated it was not involved in those discussions between the two leaders. This July match represents the first national team-style friendly since the International Ice Hockey Federation banned Russian squads from its events following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Agee told the economic forum audience that the hockey exchange would serve to melt the ice in current relations between Moscow and Washington. Organizers from the US-Russia chambers of commerce indicated the event might lead to additional youth team matches focused on sharing experience the Moscow Times reported. The Financial Times noted that the game took place against the backdrop of persistent challenges to any broader thaw in ties.

Public Authority for Civil Information equivalent data from prior years places bilateral trade volumes under strain due to sanctions but sports diplomacy has occasionally offered avenues for engagement according to historical precedents like the 1980 Miracle on Ice game. The Kremlin has repeatedly framed such cultural initiatives as constructive steps toward normalizing contacts. FT correspondent Max Seddon covered the match as an indicator of the practical boundaries facing improved US-Russian relations under the current administrations.

Further details on attendance and specific player contributions remained limited in initial coverage from the outlets. The match concluded without major incident allowing both sides to emphasize the positive aspects of the on-ice competition. Similar events in the past have occasionally preceded incremental improvements in diplomatic channels according to archived reports from Reuters on earlier US-Soviet sports exchanges.

  • Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Strikes Kyiv Killing 13

Deadly Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Strikes Kyiv Killing 13

The assault shook Kyiv for hours with loud explosions, prompting many residents to shelter in metro stations after warnings from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other authorities. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko placed the death toll at 13 with 86 people wounded in the capital. A paramedic was among those injured in extremely critical condition in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where a hotel and two five-story residential buildings sustained damage.

Damage from the overnight strike was recorded at 30 locations, mainly residential structures and civilian infrastructure, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that 20 residential buildings were hit across the city. Ukraine’s Emergency Service deployed nearly 500 personnel and 100 units of specialized vehicles, including a helicopter, to address the aftermath.

In the Desnianskyi district, rescuers responded to a damaged nine-story residential building where people remained trapped, Klitschko stated. The mayor urged residents to remain in shelters because of the continuing threat from the furious enemy attack. Klitschko added that assessment of the full impact was still under way on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the events as a night of horror in a post on X and called on Ukraine’s allies to strengthen the country’s air defenses without further delay. He rejected any attempts to justify the Russian strikes as retaliation for Ukraine’s long-range drone campaign against Russian military sites and energy facilities, which has caused fuel shortages and disrupted supply lines inside Russia. Sybiha stated that Ukraine was exercising its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter while Russia remained the aggressor, and he noted the death toll could still rise as rescue teams continued their work.

The strike forms part of a recent intensification of Russian attacks on Kyiv throughout 2026. A UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine assessment found that at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured across the country in May 2026, the highest monthly total since April 2022. The mission’s data placed the verified cumulative civilian casualty toll at more than 62,000 as of the end of May.

Ukrainian authorities have reported similar large-scale aerial assaults in preceding weeks, including one in early June 2026 that killed at least 22 people across multiple cities according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. The latest Kyiv attack occurred hours after Zelenskyy had warned of an impending massive strike. Rescue operations were continuing Thursday with the emergency service maintaining its focus on affected residential areas.

  • Four Dead in Mexico City as Massive Crowds Mark World Cup Knockout Victory

Four Dead in Mexico City as Massive Crowds Mark World Cup Knockout Victory

The Public Health Secretariat attributed three of the deaths to asphyxiation, identifying the victims as a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man. A 30-year-old man who had been hospitalized following an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest. These tragedies unfolded as fans poured into the streets across the country to mark the team’s success.

Officials estimated that 1.4 million people participated in the festivities, with major concentrations forming around the Angel of Independence in Mexico City. The secretariat’s report indicated that 1,615 individuals sought medical attention during the events, and dozens required hospitalization for various injuries and health issues. According to Reuters, the win ended a 40-year drought in World Cup knockout rounds for Mexico.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada offered condolences to the bereaved families. “On behalf of the Mexico City government and on my own behalf, we express our deepest sorrow over the deaths of the people who lost their lives yesterday during the celebrations at the Angel of Independence,” Brugada said. She added that the government would provide full assistance to the families and support the ongoing investigation.

In a separate incident in the northwestern state of Baja California, a 44-year-old man died when his vehicle struck a football supporter amid the post-match crowd chaos, authorities confirmed. This brought additional attention to the risks associated with large-scale public gatherings. The primary fatalities, however, remained those linked directly to the Mexico City celebrations.

The 2-0 victory over Ecuador propelled the co-host nation into the round of 16, sparking widespread jubilation that reportedly involved pyrotechnics which some accounts said triggered panic and the fatal crushes. Reuters detailed that city authorities had taken proactive steps by expanding screen spacing, prohibiting alcohol sales on match day and closing streets to better control the crowds. Despite these preparations, the scale of the turnout overwhelmed parts of the infrastructure.

President Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed her condolences following the incidents, as reported by the Associated Press. Health officials continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding each death to prevent similar occurrences in future events. The celebrations highlighted both the passion of Mexican football supporters and the challenges of managing massive public assemblies.

Ukraine Launches Largest Drone Assault on Moscow as Russian Forces Assault Near Slavyansk

Russian officials reported repelling more than 190 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow early on June 18 2026 in what they described as the largest such aerial assault on the capital since the full-scale war began with several striking the Kapotnya oil refinery and causing multiple fires. The attack followed a similar strike two days earlier that had already halted operations at the facility which supplies much of the capital region’s fuel according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and a summary published by The Insider. Ukrainian forces reported intercepting the bulk of the incoming threats while Russian defenses claimed to have downed hundreds of drones across multiple regions that night and the previous evening.

The refinery sustained damage to its Euro+ processing unit for the second time in three days taking it offline according to industry sources cited by Reuters. The New York Times reported that the coordinated drone offensive brought the war home for Russian civilians with black smoke visible over the capital and debris falling in surrounding areas. Moscow officials acknowledged that several drones reached the refinery complex despite air defenses engaging the majority of the swarm.

On the Seversk front Ukrainian troops repelled a two-day Russian mechanized assault toward Slavyansk along the Siverskyi Donets river involving a tank three armored vehicles seven light vehicles and about 50 personnel the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade reported. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed capture of a village east of Slavyansk but DeepState maps indicated Ukrainian forces retained control of most of the settlement according to The Insider. Ukrainian observers maintained that their positions around Lyman remained firmly under control despite Russian claims of near encirclement.

Russian forces continued accumulating troops south of Kupyansk with heavy fighting reported in several villages where Ukrainian supply lines relied on drones due to electronic warfare interference a Ukrainian military analyst told The Insider. In the Pokrovsk direction Russian units pressed attacks near Dobropillya but Ukrainian forces held key positions in nearby settlements per DeepState assessments cited in the report. Ukrainian authorities have accelerated the evacuation of industrial plants from Kramatorsk which lies 14 kilometers from the front line relocating them westward The Economist reported.

The Ukrainian General Staff denied any involvement in a reported strike on a bus carrying Belarusian children in Russia’s Bryansk region calling it a Kremlin information provocation according to The Insider. In a separate development the two sides conducted another exchange of fallen soldiers’ remains with Ukraine receiving 522 bodies and Russia receiving 33 The Insider reported citing official statements. Previous exchanges this year had involved larger numbers including transfers of 1 000 Ukrainian soldiers’ remains in April according to The Moscow Times.
