Four Dead in Mexico City as Massive Crowds Mark World Cup Knockout Victory

The Public Health Secretariat attributed three of the deaths to asphyxiation, identifying the victims as a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man. A 30-year-old man who had been hospitalized following an epileptic seizure and gastrointestinal bleeding succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest. These tragedies unfolded as fans poured into the streets across the country to mark the team’s success.

Officials estimated that 1.4 million people participated in the festivities, with major concentrations forming around the Angel of Independence in Mexico City. The secretariat’s report indicated that 1,615 individuals sought medical attention during the events, and dozens required hospitalization for various injuries and health issues. According to Reuters, the win ended a 40-year drought in World Cup knockout rounds for Mexico.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada offered condolences to the bereaved families. “On behalf of the Mexico City government and on my own behalf, we express our deepest sorrow over the deaths of the people who lost their lives yesterday during the celebrations at the Angel of Independence,” Brugada said. She added that the government would provide full assistance to the families and support the ongoing investigation.

In a separate incident in the northwestern state of Baja California, a 44-year-old man died when his vehicle struck a football supporter amid the post-match crowd chaos, authorities confirmed. This brought additional attention to the risks associated with large-scale public gatherings. The primary fatalities, however, remained those linked directly to the Mexico City celebrations.

The 2-0 victory over Ecuador propelled the co-host nation into the round of 16, sparking widespread jubilation that reportedly involved pyrotechnics which some accounts said triggered panic and the fatal crushes. Reuters detailed that city authorities had taken proactive steps by expanding screen spacing, prohibiting alcohol sales on match day and closing streets to better control the crowds. Despite these preparations, the scale of the turnout overwhelmed parts of the infrastructure.

President Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed her condolences following the incidents, as reported by the Associated Press. Health officials continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding each death to prevent similar occurrences in future events. The celebrations highlighted both the passion of Mexican football supporters and the challenges of managing massive public assemblies.
