A spokesman for Yemen’s government forces attributed the deaths of four soldiers and three civilians to the Houthi missile and drone barrage that struck military and civilian targets in al-Makha. Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili stated that power-generating stations were among the sites hit during the assault on the Red Sea port city. The Houthis countered in a released statement that their operation had concentrated on Saudi troops stationed at the port together with associated weapons storage sites.
This latest violence forms part of recurring clashes along Yemen’s western seaboard. The Iran-aligned Houthi movement has frequently directed attacks against government positions and associated infrastructure in the area. According to the Council on Foreign Relations the underlying civil conflict erupted in 2014 when Houthi rebels seized the capital of Sanaa.
A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year to back the internationally recognized administration against the insurgents. The prolonged fighting has inflicted severe humanitarian costs across the country. United Nations figures show that roughly 377,000 people had lost their lives by early 2022 with 60 percent of those deaths resulting from indirect effects such as starvation and preventable disease.
More than 21 million Yemenis or two-thirds of the population still depend on humanitarian support the world body has reported. The Red Sea corridor has assumed heightened strategic importance as Houthi actions have at times disrupted global shipping lanes. Earlier incidents in the vicinity have involved both ground assaults and aerial campaigns targeting similar facilities.
Al-Makha functions as an important logistical hub for the southern and western regions under government control. Disruption to its electricity supply could hamper relief efforts and daily operations for residents already facing severe shortages. The military spokesman stopped short of detailing any specific operational impacts from the strikes.
International efforts to broker a lasting peace have yielded only temporary halts in the fighting since a nationwide truce took effect in 2022. Both the Houthis and the recognized government maintain parallel dialogues with regional powers. The fresh attack arrives as diplomatic initiatives seek to address underlying grievances that have sustained the war for more than a decade.
