Yemeni Forces Strike Houthi Targets After Deadly Attacks on Camps

Yemen’s armed forces announced the launch of a military operation on Saturday targeting Houthi fighters along multiple front lines. Col. Majid al-Nuzaili said the strikes hit positions and military equipment in response to recent attacks on government camps in Marib and Hadhramaut. The army spokesman described the move as necessary following the escalation that has gripped several axes since early July. Nuzaili said the operation would deter further aggression from the group.

Al-Nuzaili accused the Houthis of dragging Yemen into wider regional conflicts to advance foreign agendas. He blamed the Iran-aligned group for aggravating the country’s economic crisis and stoking sectarian tensions across society. The spokesman held the Houthis and their backers responsible for any additional escalation that might follow. He warned that the Yemeni army would respond «without hesitation» if attacks continued, according to statements carried by local media.

Yemen’s Defense Ministry reported that the Thursday ballistic missile and drone strikes killed 17 soldiers and officers while wounding many more. The assaults targeted army units in the provinces of Marib and Hadhramaut near the Saudi border. AP News indicated the toll could reach at least 30 based on accounts from military officials. The Arab Times reported that the Houthis had not issued any immediate response to the army’s announced operation.

The Council on Foreign Relations Global Conflict Tracker notes that Yemen’s civil war erupted in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and much of the north. Saudi-led intervention later pushed the group back from some areas and helped stabilize front lines around Marib, the government’s key remaining stronghold in the north. Houthi offensives have repeatedly threatened that city in the years since while the group expanded attacks into the Red Sea and against Saudi territory.

An Al Jazeera assessment found that both sides showed fresh mobilization in July 2026 with clashes erupting in the Dhale governorate that produced more than 30 casualties. The recent strikes and counter-operation come as the long-running conflict risks unraveling a period of relative calm that followed earlier truce attempts. Houthi actions have also included renewed threats against shipping and neighboring states this year.

The U.S. mission to Yemen condemned the Houthi attacks as further examples of terrorism against the Yemeni population. CFR data shows the war has produced one of the world’s largest humanitarian emergencies with millions displaced and widespread food insecurity persisting. International diplomacy continues to seek de-escalation even as violence intensifies along established battle lines.
