Human Rights Groups Condemn Iran’s Surge in Political Prisoner Executions Amid War

The Arab Times reported that the Iranian regime has been using the war as a pretext to increase executions of political prisoners. Prisoners have accused authorities of leveraging these executions to restore their authority following periods of unrest. The executions carried out in Isfahan have sparked public anger according to the Kuwaiti newspaper published on July 30, 2026.

Human Rights Watch reported that thousands of detainees including political prisoners are at risk with at least eight men arbitrarily executed on charges such as espionage and waging war on God between March 18 and 31. The organization noted that instead of releasing prisoners Iranian authorities have continued arrests of dissidents and executions under the shadow of the war that followed the Israel-Iran conflict in June 2025. This has heightened fears of mass arbitrary and secret executions.

Mahmoud Amari Mogadam the director of the Norway-based Iran Human Rights told CNN that 44 political prisoners have been killed since March 18 describing the figure as unprecedented. He attributed the acceleration to the international community’s focus on securing a peace deal which has resulted in little condemnation of the executions. The director added that the regime sends a clear message to Iranians through public hangings and forced confessions broadcast on television.

Amnesty International documented at least 2,159 executions across Iran during 2025 with the pace accelerating significantly after the 12-day war in June 2025. The group called for urgent diplomatic action to halt the use of the death penalty against political dissidents and those accused in security-related cases. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the executions of individuals including Ramin Zaleh and Karim Maroufpour.

The BBC reported a surge in political executions since the start of the war highlighting prisoner messages warning this may be the last time you hear my voice. Public executions of two protesters took place early Tuesday following additional executions. The Kurdistan Human Rights Network joined Human Rights Watch in detailing the risks faced by prisoners during the conflict.

Iran International noted that Iran accounted for 64 percent of global executions in 2024 a pattern that continued into 2025 based on compiled figures from monitoring groups. The executions have included protesters linked to the January 2026 demonstrations with cases such as that of Mehdi Khanki reported by HRANA. Authorities have conducted these in prisons including facilities in Tabriz and Shushtar.
