Eight Civilians Killed in Widespread Russian Missile and Drone Barrage on Ukraine

Ukrainian officials reported that the overnight Russian assault struck 10 regions, destroying or damaging dozens of homes, businesses and infrastructure sites while claiming the lives of at least eight civilians, some of them children. The barrage reached areas near the Polish border far from active fighting in the east, where Ukraine maintains weapons storage and production facilities, according to the assessment shared by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Poland has opened an inquiry into Ukrainian claims that one of the Russian cruise missiles violated its airspace during the operation, NATO sources confirmed.

The strikes occurred two days after Zelenskyy held talks in Washington with President Donald Trump and U.S. defense firms to accelerate delivery of Patriot interceptors. Zelenskyy highlighted the strain on Ukrainian air defenses, noting that the Iran war had reduced available stocks of the key American-made systems. «Given the critical shortage of air defense missiles from our partners, our warriors are accomplishing truly incredible things, demonstrating a very high level of professionalism,» he said.

Zelenskyy added in his social media update that the latest Russian action «once again proves that protection against the Russian missile threat is the most important task when it comes to saving the lives of our people.» He detailed that the attack involved more than 70 missiles, many ballistic in type, paired with over 280 drones. Ukrainian forces intercepted more than 260 of those unmanned aircraft, Zelenskyy reported.

In its own statement the Russian Defense Ministry described the targets as air bases, arms manufacturing plants and military communications and supply hubs. The operation forms part of what has become nearly daily aerial pressure on Ukrainian cities, a pattern documented by the Associated Press in coverage throughout the conflict. Such actions come as Ukraine conducts its own long-range strikes that have disrupted Russian oil production and triggered fuel shortages inside Russia.

The United Nations has recorded thousands of civilian deaths across Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, according to the world body’s human rights monitoring mission, although investigators caution that the actual toll is likely higher. This latest incident adds to the cumulative impact on non-combatants as the war enters its fifth year. Recent Russian bomb attacks have also injured dozens in eastern Ukrainian cities, Reuters reported.
