South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the launch from the North’s eastern coastal region at approximately 6 a.m. local time. Both Seoul and Tokyo assessed that the projectile flew roughly 700 kilometers before landing in international waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, with Japanese officials confirming it stayed outside their exclusive economic zone. The South Korean military has initiated a detailed analysis of the missile’s specifications while withholding an immediate classification of its precise type.
This test followed a similar firing from the same Wonsan area six days earlier on Aug. 6, according to South Korean, Japanese and U.S. defense authorities. That earlier projectile was identified as a short-range ballistic missile, with the latest event bringing the regional tally of such activity to a heightened pace in recent weeks. South Korean assessments placed the Wednesday launch as the 11th suspected ballistic missile test conducted by North Korea in 2026.
The launches coincide with preparations for annual joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, exercises that Pyongyang has consistently denounced as invasion rehearsals, an Associated Press review noted. A fact sheet from the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation recorded more than 272 North Korean missile launches between 2012 and 2025. North Korea has yet to issue an official statement confirming or detailing the latest test through its state media channels.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield drills, which involve thousands of troops and focus on enhancing operational readiness, have drawn fresh condemnation from North Korea’s foreign ministry in recent days. KCNA quoted the ministry describing the activities as posing an immediate threat to regional security. Reports from multiple outlets indicated that the current iteration of the exercises was shortened by six days at the request of the U.S. side.
President Donald Trump referenced his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un while calling for reduced scale and duration of the drills, statements covered by The Guardian and BBC. South Korea’s military confirmed the adjusted schedule would see the exercises conclude on Friday rather than continuing for the full original period. The longstanding alliance maintains approximately 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea to support deterrence efforts.
