Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday welcomed the US-Iran memorandum of understanding as a step toward regional stability and economic growth. The statement praised the deal’s focus on ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and commended Pakistan’s role in the mediation process.
The ministry’s announcement on X emphasised that the agreement represented an important development for consolidating sustainable peace regionally and internationally. It voiced support for resolving disputes through dialogue in accordance with international law and principles of good-neighbourliness. Qatar also recognised the contributions of various parties in helping to reduce tensions and bring viewpoints closer.
The memorandum includes immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for shipping without tolls, according to reports on the draft deal. It establishes a 60-day timeframe for negotiations on a full war-ending agreement, including nuclear issues and sanctions relief. This follows intense mediation involving Pakistan and Qatar in recent weeks.
Qatari negotiators had flown to Tehran to facilitate the final stages of the agreement, a diplomat told CBS News. The Emir of Qatar held phone conversations with US President Donald Trump on the peace efforts. Pakistan’s army chief was credited with leading the primary mediation between the sides.
The recent conflict had seen Iran block transit through the strategic waterway, impacting global energy markets. The Soufan Center noted that the MOU aims to end such disruptions promptly as part of the ceasefire extension. Restoration of pre-war shipping levels is targeted within 30 days under the terms.
Additional regional actors including Egypt and Turkey provided backing to the talks, as outlined in coverage of the negotiations. The memorandum is slated for formal signing on June 19 with preparatory meetings in Doha, multiple outlets reported. Qatar’s positive stance aligns with its history of diplomatic engagement in the Gulf.
