Kuwait’s foreign minister delivered the Amir’s message during talks with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in the Japanese capital on August 26, 2026, as part of an official visit to advance mutual interests. The communication centered on the longstanding relations between Kuwait and Japan along with opportunities to build on them in various sectors. It also covered recent developments across the region that carry implications for both nations, according to Arab Times.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs data establish that formal diplomatic relations between the two countries date to December 1961. The partnership reached a new level in May 2025 when Kuwait’s Crown Prince visited Japan and the sides agreed to upgrade ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. That accord covers energy alongside political consultations, security coordination, economic collaboration and cultural programs.
Energy trade continues to define the economic relationship, with Kuwait ranking as a consistent supplier of crude oil to Japan. Japanese government figures placed exports from Japan to Kuwait at $2.26 billion in 2025, led by motor vehicles, machinery and steel products. Kuwait maintained a trade surplus of $668.6 million with Japan during the first seven months of 2026, Japanese finance ministry statistics show.
Recent diplomatic activity has extended the partnership into artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and renewable energy. Japanese Ambassador to Kuwait Kenichiro Mukai told Kuwait Times that high-level talks would be announced within days to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership. The envoy added that discussions also address secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and resilience in energy supply chains.
Sports and people-to-people exchanges have acquired fresh momentum ahead of the Asian Games hosted by Japan in September and October. The Japanese embassy has readied more than 200 visas for Kuwait’s delegation of athletes, coaches and officials. Ambassador Mukai noted that such contacts complement traditional cooperation in oil, electricity and water by fostering broader societal links.
A series of ministerial interactions this year, including a July 2026 foreign ministers’ meeting, reinforced coordination on regional security questions. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs listed multiple bilateral engagements throughout 2026 that reflect the breadth of the relationship. These steps build on earlier economic assistance programs that totaled nearly 1.23 billion yen in grants and technical cooperation until 1998.
