Imran Khan Returned to Adiala Jail After Medical Clearance at Islamabad Hospital

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said former Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred back to Adiala Jail early on August 21, 2026 after undergoing a medical examination at a hospital in Islamabad. The 73-year-old was taken for the check-up under tight security during the night of August 20-21 pursuant to a Supreme Court directive. A team of doctors that included an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician conducted the assessment and declared Khan medically fit.

Tarar added that Khan’s sister Uzma Khan remained present for the full duration of the examination and any treatment administered. The former prime minister was returned to the jail around 5 a.m. local time after completion of the medical process. The minister shared the details in a statement posted on X.

Although the Supreme Court had specified Shifa International Hospital for the examination, authorities chose the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences over security concerns linked to potential PTI supporter gatherings near the first site, Tarar explained. Doctors from Shifa International Hospital participated in the evaluation at the alternative location to maintain consistency with the court order. The Supreme Court had previously ruled that Khan could remain hospitalized until the next hearing of his case scheduled for September 16.

Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail since August 2023 following convictions in multiple cases that he and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party have described as politically motivated, according to the Arab Times report. A Reuters review of the legal actions indicates Khan has confronted more than 150 cases overall. All but one of his convictions have been suspended or overturned with appeals pending.

In the Al-Qadir Trust land corruption case, Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi received a 14-year sentence in 2025, Reuters reported on August 18, 2026. The Toshakhana matter involving the sale of state gifts initially produced a three-year term in 2023 that was later suspended before an anti-graft court issued a 14-year sentence in January 2024 for the same case. Khan denies wrongdoing in all the proceedings against him.

The Supreme Court intervention for the medical review followed months of petitions from Khan’s legal team citing health issues that included elevated blood pressure, an Al Jazeera report from August 18, 2026 stated. His lawyers have pushed for inclusion of his personal physician in oversight boards and greater access to family visits. Court documents confirm the next hearing on related matters will occur on September 16.
