Carlos told Okaz newspaper that rumors of his embrace of Islam after reciting the Shahada were false. He stated that he has the utmost respect for Islam and described it as wonderful to see his wife praying. The 53-year-old added that he and El Tahiri arranged distinct wedding events to respect his Catholic relatives and her Muslim family and friends, according to an Arab Times report on his comments.
Reports of the conversion spread after social media images from the wedding appeared online. Turkish lawmaker Ali Şahin said representatives of Brazil’s Muslim community informed him that Carlos had met with Sheikh Jihad Hamada and recited the Shahada. Some outlets also carried attributed quotes in which Carlos supposedly said Cristiano Ronaldo had congratulated him on the change.
Transfermarkt figures show Carlos earned 125 caps and scored 11 goals for Brazil between 1992 and 2006. He played a central role in the team’s 2002 FIFA World Cup victory. Real Madrid club records list 527 appearances and 68 goals across his 11 seasons with the Spanish side, during which he secured three UEFA Champions League titles.
El Tahiri is a FIFA-licensed football agent based in Spain who specializes in player management and related projects. Carlos recounted that the couple first met during a football business meeting and have been together for about two years. Reports describe her as a successful businesswoman with professional ties to the sport.
The statement to Okaz contradicted earlier third-party accounts that had circulated widely. Carlos criticised the spread of inaccurate reports about his religious beliefs. His direct comments represent the clearest denial to date of the conversion narrative.
