  • Coast Guard Intensifies Search for 87 Missing After Fatal Blaze on Palawan-Bound Ferry

Coast Guard Intensifies Search for 87 Missing After Fatal Blaze on Palawan-Bound Ferry

The Philippine Coast Guard said the MV June Aster was about 2.2 kilometres from shore near Barangay Marcilla when the fire started on Wednesday evening as the vessel made its way from Manila to Coron in Palawan province. Coast Guard Captain Noemi Cayabyab stated that 42 people had been rescued, including 38 passengers and four crew members, while five bodies were recovered and brought ashore. According to the coast guard the ship’s manifest listed 134 people on board, consisting of 117 passengers and 17 crew, leaving 87 unaccounted for though Cayabyab noted those figures were preliminary and could change as the search progressed.

Video shared by the Philippine Coast Guard on social media showed the ferry completely engulfed in flames against the night sky. Cayabyab told local radio that attempts to put out the fire were ongoing into Thursday and that rescuers had not yet been able to interview the survivors. The spokesperson added that the coast guard was working tirelessly because time is of the essence in such operations and expressed understanding for the anxiety of families with relatives still missing.

The destination of Coron is a popular tourist area in Palawan known for its clear waters, towering cliffs and World War II shipwrecks that draw scuba divers from around the globe, according to information from the Philippine Department of Tourism. The ferry had departed from the Port of Manila and was nearing its arrival point when the blaze erupted roughly 1.2 nautical miles northeast of Barangay Marcilla. Survivors were transported to an evacuation centre in nearby Barangay Turda after being pulled from the water by coast guard teams and assisting fishermen.

The Philippine Coast Guard has responded to numerous maritime incidents across the archipelago in recent years where sea travel connects more than 7,000 islands and carries millions of passengers annually on inter-island routes. Data from the coast guard indicates that ferry services form a vital part of domestic transportation in the country. In this incident the cause of the fire aboard the MV June Aster remains under investigation, with no preliminary details released by authorities.

Cayabyab informed media outlets including CNA and Reuters that the numbers of rescued, dead and missing were based on the latest available data from the manifesto and on-scene reports. Footage released by the coast guard depicted responders placing bodies in bags and throwing life jackets to people in the water. The operation continued with support from local vessels as officials worked to determine the full scope of the casualty count.

Philippine authorities have yet to release the identities of those who died or were rescued pending notification of their families, according to updates from the coast guard. Search and rescue teams were expected to maintain efforts until all individuals are located, the Philippine Coast Guard indicated in its briefings. Regional reports from outlets such as the BBC and ABC News noted that the proximity of the fire to land had aided the initial rescue of the 42 survivors.

  • Qatar Civil Defence Contains Fire Aboard Marine Vessel at Al Wakrah Port

Qatar Civil Defence Contains Fire Aboard Marine Vessel at Al Wakrah Port

The Qatari Ministry of Interior announced that civil defence teams had contained a fire which broke out aboard a marine vessel at Al Wakrah Port on September 9. Emergency responders mobilised immediately upon receiving the report and followed established protocols to extinguish the flames while preventing any spread to other parts of the vessel or nearby port facilities. The ministry confirmed that the incident resulted in no injuries among crew or individuals in the vicinity, with teams also securing the site and addressing the immediate aftermath.

According to the ministry, relevant authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess any damage sustained by the vessel. The rapid response helped limit the fire’s impact, ensuring that port operations faced minimal broader disruption beyond the affected area. This marks the latest in a series of swift interventions by Qatar’s emergency services at maritime locations.

Al Wakrah Port functions as a key maritime facility supporting fishing activities and smaller vessel traffic near the larger Hamad Port complex, which forms a central part of Qatar’s expanding logistics network. Hamad Port now handles 1.8 million TEUs annually across its container terminals following recent expansions that added 2.4 million TEUs of capacity in late 2023.[[1]](https://kitalent.com/article-al-wakrah-logistics-talent-gap) The surrounding Al Wakrah Municipality has seen industrial land values rise 47 percent since 2020 amid growing commercial demand.

A similar incident occurred at the same port in October 2025 when a fire on fishing boats was traced to an illegal electrical connection, leading to the arrest of two Asian nationals who were referred to public prosecution.[[2]](https://www.qatar-tribune.com/article/201006/latest-news/illegal-power-connection-caused-al-wakra-port-boat-fire-two-asians-arrested) That event caused material damage but no injuries, prompting authorities to reinforce safety checks on docked vessels. The current investigation will examine whether any comparable factors contributed to Wednesday’s fire.

The Ministry of Interior noted that safety and emergency response operations at Al Wakrah Port follow procedures aimed at ensuring rapid containment of incidents that could affect navigation or infrastructure.[[3]](https://www.voiceofemirates.com/en/news/2026/09/09/qatar-announces-containment-of-a-fire-on-a-ship-at-al-wakra-port-with-no-injuries/) Multiple outlets including The Peninsula Qatar reported the same details drawn from the official announcement, underscoring the absence of casualties.[[4]](https://thepeninsulaqatar.com/article/09/09/2026/civil-defence-contains-fire-at-al-wakra-port-no-injuries-reported) Further updates are anticipated as the assessment of the vessel continues.

Qatar’s ports have recorded rising traffic volumes in recent years, with the Al Wakrah Expressway managing more than 12,000 truck movements daily according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. This growth has placed additional emphasis on maintaining rigorous safety standards across maritime operations in the region. The ministry’s statement indicated that all necessary measures remain in place to support a full review of the event.

  • Israel Directs Shutdown of British Consulate in Jerusalem Over UK Settlement Sanctions

Israel Directs Shutdown of British Consulate in Jerusalem Over UK Settlement Sanctions

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced a series of retaliatory measures against the United Kingdom on September 8, 2026, including the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem. The order gives the consulate 30 days to cease operations, with diplomats losing accreditation at that time, an Israeli official told Reuters. Additionally, British personnel involved in a U.S.-led coordination center for Gaza in Kiryat Gat must leave immediately, according to reports in The Jerusalem Post. Sa’ar framed the response as necessary following the UK’s imposition of sanctions on Israeli settlements.

The UK sanctions, announced by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, ban imports of goods from settlements in the occupied West Bank and were coordinated with France, Canada and nine other countries, The Guardian reported. Miliband described the settler activities as amounting to ethnic cleansing carried out with the tacit support of the Israeli government. A British official cited by KAN News called Israel’s retaliatory steps regrettable but maintained that the sanctions addressed a moral and security imperative related to violence in the West Bank. The official stressed that the measures targeted extremists rather than Israel as a whole.

In addition to the consulate closure, Israel will terminate longstanding British training programs for Palestinian Authority security forces in Ramallah and bar entry to 12 British lawmakers and activists, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Sa’ar listed these individuals as having engaged in antisemitic and anti-Israel activities, according to The Times of Israel. The foreign minister accused the UK of interfering in Israel’s upcoming elections scheduled for late October. These steps mark a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The British consulate in East Jerusalem, which was established in 1839, functions as the United Kingdom’s diplomatic mission to the Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, The New York Times noted in its coverage. Its closure represents a major disruption to British representation in the region. Sources indicated that Israel’s government planned to convene on September 10, 2026, to formulate responses to the other nations that joined the UK in the sanctions effort, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

BBC News reported that the sanctions followed increased international concern over settler violence in the West Bank after recent attacks by Israeli extremists on Palestinian communities. Israel has rejected the characterization of its policies, with Sa’ar calling the British accusations outrageous and false in his recorded statement. The foreign minister’s English-language remarks echoed his initial Hebrew comments that described a boycott of settlement goods as a despicable practice harming law-abiding citizens and Palestinian workers.

The dispute comes amid broader international isolation for Israel following the Gaza war, as described in coverage by The Christian Science Monitor. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has separately criticized settler violence while maintaining strong support for the country, according to The New York Times. British officials expressed that their actions were not intended as an attack on Israel but as a response to extremists and violence in the territory.

  • Kuwait Labor Authority Cites 155 Firms and 415 Workers for Summer Heat Ban Violations

Kuwait Labor Authority Cites 155 Firms and 415 Workers for Summer Heat Ban Violations

The Public Authority for Manpower conducted field inspections across multiple governorates as part of its annual campaign to enforce the prohibition on outdoor work during peak heat hours. According to data published by Arab Times, inspectors identified violations at 155 companies involving a total of 415 workers during the restricted period. Follow-up checks confirmed that many of the cited firms had taken corrective measures, with authorities reporting limited instances of repeat offenses across the inspected sites.

Administrative Resolution No. 535 of 2015 prohibits laborers from working in open areas between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. from the start of June through the end of August each year. The Public Authority for Manpower has said the regulation forms part of broader efforts to align with international labor standards on occupational safety. A comparable enforcement drive in 2024 resulted in 213 workers found in breach of the same rules, according to statistics compiled by Kuwait Local.

Penalties for breaches fall under Law No. 6 of 2010 and can include fines ranging from 100 to 200 Kuwaiti dinars per worker involved, along with possible suspension of company files until compliance is achieved. The authority urged employers in construction and related sectors to adjust schedules to avoid disruptions while protecting staff from heat stress. Data from the U.S. State Department’s 2025 Trafficking in Persons Report noted that Kuwait penalized more than 4,200 companies for various labor violations in 2024, indicating sustained regulatory oversight.

Temperatures in Kuwait frequently exceed 50 degrees Celsius during summer months, elevating risks of heat-related illnesses among outdoor workers who make up a significant portion of the expatriate labor force. Human Rights Watch reported in June 2025 that such midday bans across Gulf states have become essential as extreme heat events occur earlier and more often in the region. The Kuwaiti measure aims to reduce occupational injuries linked to high temperatures, though enforcement relies on both official inspections and public cooperation.

The authority received dozens of public reports through its dedicated hotline during the campaign, prompting targeted visits to suspected sites. Arab Times reported that the 155 flagged companies spanned various sectors where outdoor activities predominate, though specific breakdowns by industry were not detailed in the release. Inspectors revisited more than 100 locations to verify adherence after initial warnings were issued.

Public Authority for Manpower officials have emphasized that the ban regulates working conditions without halting project timelines when properly managed. In a related 2025 summary, the authority documented 68 workers and 63 sites penalized over the full summer period in one accounting, underscoring variability in annual figures. Officials continue to monitor compliance as part of ongoing labor protection initiatives.

  • Twelve Nations Pledge Trade Limits on West Bank Settlements to Preserve Two-State Solution

Twelve Nations Pledge Trade Limits on West Bank Settlements to Preserve Two-State Solution

The foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on September 8, 2026, declaring that Israeli government actions in the West Bank are undermining prospects for a two-state solution. The document pointed to rapidly deteriorating conditions marked by unprecedented settler violence and settlement expansion, including the decision to publish tenders for the E1 project. According to the statement published on the UK government website, the 12 nations remain unequivocally committed to a two-state solution based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions that would allow Israel and a sovereign Palestinian state to coexist in peace and security.

The statement confirmed the countries’ intention to introduce or support restrictions on trade in goods with settlements considered illegal under international law, in line with their national procedures. In this context the UK, France and Canada welcomed prior steps taken by Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium and announced they would advance their own national measures to ban such trade. A separate joint statement by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated that settlements pose a direct threat to peace and pledged targeted actions against those who facilitate or profit from them.

Burnham, Macron and Carney stated that a two-state solution is critical for peace, stability and security in the Middle East and beyond, according to their announcement carried by Reuters. «Settlements are illegal under international law,» they noted while announcing plans to ban imports of goods from settlements and enforce additional measures. The three leaders also expressed a desire for continued partnership with Israel alongside their support for a safe and secure Palestinian state.

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told parliament that Britain now considers the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory unlawful, a position aligned with an International Court of Justice conclusion, the UK government release said. Miliband added that the UK would use its human rights sanctions regime against several extremist settlers who incited violence against Palestinian communities. In response Israel announced it would close the British consulate in East Jerusalem, Reuters reported on the same day.

A Guardian article citing UN figures indicated more than 1,500 incidents of settler violence occurred in the West Bank this year. The Israeli government has approved 104 new settlements since December 2022, according to data referenced in multiple reports including from The New York Times. These trends prompted the coordinated measures aimed at protecting the viability of a negotiated two-state outcome, the joint ministerial statement concluded.

The 12 nations anchored their position in principles from the New York Declaration adopted one year earlier, the foreign ministers’ document showed. They stressed the need to act before further damage occurs to the possibility of Israel and Palestine living side by side within secure borders. The UK government separately detailed that its import ban on settlement goods would take six to nine months to implement while also targeting services such as construction and financing linked to expansion.
