UAE Presidential Diplomatic Adviser Anwar Gargash warned Tuesday that Iran’s attacks on Arab Gulf states have deepened its own crisis and weakened its negotiating position as the confrontation with the United States enters a phase of heightened economic pressure. Gargash noted that the standoff has advanced beyond preliminary memorandums of understanding while Iranian attempts to dominate the Strait of Hormuz have effectively ended, describing Tehran’s strategic choices as gravely misguided and increasingly isolating. He stressed that the route to ending the conflict involves partnership with Gulf states to facilitate de-escalation and a political resolution rather than continued targeting of neighbors.
According to the Arab Times report, Gargash said, «The path out of this war does not lie through targeting the Arab Gulf states, but rather through working with them to pave the way for de-escalation and the pursuit of a political exit from the conflict.» The remarks underscore the UAE’s view that Iranian aggression has backfired amid the broader regional turmoil that began earlier this year. They also coincide with the UAE’s recent decision to impose a full trade embargo on Iran.
The embargo, announced last week after Iran allegedly fired ballistic missiles toward the UAE, severs a key trading relationship that supplied Iran with roughly 30 percent of its imports in recent years. This step aligns with US efforts to ramp up sanctions, which include secondary measures against any nations assisting Tehran in evading restrictions. The combined pressures are expected to significantly constrain Iran’s ability to sustain its economy during the ongoing conflict.
Disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles around a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade, have amplified global economic concerns according to a UNCTAD publication.
Iranian actions in the waterway have included threats and attacks that prompted international naval responses and higher insurance costs for maritime operators. The chokepoint’s vulnerability has been highlighted repeatedly since the escalation in February.
US Treasury authorities unveiled expansive new sanctions last week targeting Iran’s oil exports, shadow fleet tankers and digital assets used to circumvent existing restrictions. President Donald Trump characterized the initiative as the most severe economic campaign against Iran to date, warning third countries against providing any support. These developments form part of what officials describe as an economic operation designed to force a change in Iranian behavior.
Gargash has issued similar cautions in recent months, including statements in April that labeled Iranian strikes on Gulf infrastructure as premeditated and indiscriminate. His assessments have consistently pointed to the attacks as solidifying the perception of Iran as a primary threat to Gulf security. The latest comments reinforce calls for Tehran to engage constructively with its Arab neighbors to chart a path toward stability.
