Xinhua reported that Xi, who also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the call during the event at the Great Hall of the People. The president highlighted Jiang Zemin’s role in the country’s development path. Xi stated that Jiang had made indelible contributions to the cause, including breaking new ground in reform and opening up and achieving moderate prosperity for the people.
According to a CGTN report, Xi further praised the late leader for advancing socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century. «Jiang made indelible contributions to safeguarding the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics, breaking new ground in reform and opening up in all respects, achieving overall moderate prosperity in people’s lives and successfully advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century,» Xi said. The remarks came exactly one century after Jiang Zemin was born on August 17, 1926.
China Daily reported that Xi also called for learning from Jiang Zemin’s dedication to the people. «Jiang always stood with the people and cared for their well-being,» Xi said in his address. The commemoration included a grand gathering attended by party officials and was broadcast live across the country.
World Bank data shows that China’s economy has averaged more than 9 percent annual GDP growth since 1978, when reforms associated with the socialist path began to take hold. The growth has lifted almost 800 million people out of extreme poverty. The bank classifies China as an upper-middle-income country as a result of these developments.
A Baker Institute analysis noted the evolution of emphasis in party speeches, with addresses focusing on national rejuvenation alongside socialist principles. Jiang Zemin’s own leadership period saw China join the World Trade Organization in 2001, further integrating the economy globally. Such milestones formed part of the foundation for subsequent progress under the framework of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The South China Morning Post reported that preparations for the centenary included airing a 12-part documentary on Jiang Zemin nightly in the days leading up to the event. Xi presided over the ceremony in line with political norms for honoring former leaders. Xinhua distributed the details of the gathering, which started at 10 a.m. local time.
