House Passes Resolution Directing End to US Role in Iran War

US President Donald Trump denounced a House of Representatives vote to end American military action against Iran as «unpatriotic» on Thursday, June 4, 2026, after the chamber passed the measure the previous day. The 215-208 approval, which included four Republicans joining Democrats, sends a largely symbolic resolution to the Senate calling for withdrawal of US troops from the three-month-old war that began with unauthorized strikes in late February. Trump said the timing interfered with his final negotiations with Tehran to conclude the conflict.

The resolution invokes provisions of the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which requires presidents to secure congressional approval within 60 days of introducing forces into hostilities or withdraw them, according to the text of the law. Democrats have accused the administration of violating the statute and the Constitution by launching the campaign without prior legislative consent, France 24 reported. A review by the National Constitution Center highlighted that this debate echoes long-standing tensions over war powers and noted Congress has not formally declared war since World War II.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that the vote occurred «right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran.» «Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand,» he added in the post detailed by France 24. He further stated that «(Democrats) would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories.»

The president singled out the Republican defectors in the same Truth Social post, writing «The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story – They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves.» According to an Al Jazeera report, those four were Representatives Thomas Massie, Tom Barrett, Warren Davidson and Brian Fitzpatrick. The vote follows a May Senate procedural approval of a similar resolution by a 50-47 margin that also saw four Republicans cross party lines, the Guardian reported.

The 1973 War Powers Resolution was enacted over President Nixon’s veto to reassert congressional authority following the Vietnam War, according to the National Constitution Center’s March 2026 analysis. One congressional Facebook post referenced the resolution having been applied 168 times since 1973. The current Iran conflict began in late February 2026 with US and Israeli strikes, multiple outlets including Reuters confirmed.

This House action represents the first final passage of such a measure in the chamber since the war started, The Washington Post reported. The resolution directs Trump to terminate operations absent explicit congressional authorization. It remains largely symbolic because it faces a certain veto and would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override, according to BBC coverage of the developments.
