The attack on the base, which serves as a key hub for US air operations against Iran, left the A-10 with a severely damaged wing while the F-15s sustained only light damage and were deemed serviceable, people familiar with the matter confirmed to Air and Space Forces Magazine. CBS News first reported the aircraft damage, citing sources, with the strike coming hours after the US sank five Iranian tankers. A spokesman for US Central Command did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.
Jordanian authorities stated that their air defenses intercepted 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles fired toward the country, with the remaining two falling in unpopulated areas and causing no casualties. US forces at the base launched more than 30 Patriot missiles to defend against the barrage, according to the CBS News report. The overnight strike formed part of Iran’s retaliation after the US targeted four crude oil carriers in the Gulf of Oman and a fifth vessel near Kharg Island.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had struck the American Al-Azraq base, also known as Muwaffaq Salti, with heavy missile fire as part of a punitive operation. The IRGC asserted that the missiles hit maintenance, preparation and deployment sites for F-15, F-16 and F-35 aircraft along with their shelters. Iranian state media distributed video it said showed the launches directed at Jordan.
This event marks the latest in a series of Iranian strikes on the base throughout 2026. In July, a missile attack on the same facility killed three US Army soldiers, US officials reported at the time. The base hosts dozens of American warplanes and functions as a central node for regional airpower projection.
Satellite imagery analyzed by defense outlets has previously shown scorch patterns and structural damage to hardened hangars and aircraft shelters at the site from earlier barrages. Open-source intelligence assessments have pointed to impacts on flight-line infrastructure despite defensive efforts. Jordan has consistently reported high interception rates while the IRGC has claimed significant damage to US assets.
No American personnel were killed in the September 8 strike, according to a Trump administration official. The IRGC had earlier claimed destruction of US tanker aircraft and fighter jets in separate statements that could not be independently verified. US and Jordanian officials confirmed the base was attacked but emphasized that the vast majority of missiles were intercepted.
