Wikipedia contains more than 60 million articles in 348 languages as of June 16, 2026, according to the project’s Russian-language entry. Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger founded the free encyclopedia on January 15, 2001, with ownership held by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation. The platform ranks eighth in global website traffic per May 2025 statistics and follows policies centered on neutrality and source verifiability.
The Russian entry on Wikipedia listed 2,105,766 articles in the Russian edition on that date. It identified servers in several U.S. cities along with Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The underlying MediaWiki software, developed in PHP, enables the site’s distinctive open editing environment.
A Pew Research Center analysis released in January 2026 for the project’s 25th anniversary found the total article count exceeded 66 million by December 2025. English Wikipedia alone held around 7.2 million articles containing more than 5 billion words, Wikipedia statistics from June 2026 confirmed. Growth has relied on contributions from a global community of volunteer editors.
According to the Russian Wikipedia page, the project enforces three fundamental policies: a neutral point of view, verifiability through reliable sources, and no original research. These standards emerged early in its development as it transitioned from the more formal Nupedia predecessor. Community discussions and edit histories help uphold the guidelines across all language versions.
The encyclopedia has drawn criticism for instances of vandalism, potential biases and variable reliability, the entry acknowledged. Volunteer patrollers and protection tools work to mitigate such problems on an ongoing basis. The Wikimedia Foundation itself does not intervene in content disputes but provides the technical backbone for operations.
Data compiled on Wikipedia’s statistics pages placed the number of active language editions at 345 out of 361 created as of June 2026. The English version represents roughly 11 percent of all pages when non-article namespaces are included. An offline Kiwix version of English Wikipedia with images requires approximately 100 gigabytes of storage.
The Pew Research Center report additionally noted that certain language editions, including Swedish and Cebuano, have seen substantial article growth aided by automated bots. Russian Wikipedia has consistently ranked among the top non-English editions by traffic. The collaborative model pioneered in 2001 has proven resilient through a quarter century of continuous development.
