The Jordanian Armed Forces reported that its air defense systems engaged 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran toward the kingdom on Tuesday night. Eighteen of the incoming projectiles were successfully intercepted and destroyed, a military statement said. The two missiles that penetrated the defenses fell in uninhabited areas, producing neither casualties nor material damage. Engineering units were deployed to examine and clear any debris from the interceptions, according to the same release.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the barrage as a punitive strike on a US military installation at Al-Azraq, according to Iranian state media. The IRGC presented the action as retaliation for recent US strikes that destroyed five Iranian oil carriers, multiple regional outlets reported. Jordan’s military did not confirm the specific target in its public statement but affirmed that all activity was tracked through its surveillance network.
A military source told the Jordan News Agency that monitoring and assessment operations continued into Wednesday to evaluate the full scope of the incident. The source added that the armed forces maintained full operational readiness throughout the event. No disruptions to civilian routines were recorded across the kingdom, the statement indicated.
This defensive operation adds to a series of similar actions taken by Jordan throughout 2026. The Jordan News Agency reported that the armed forces neutralized 95 Iranian aerial threats, consisting of 70 ballistic missiles and 25 explosive drones, during a 16-day span in July. All those interceptions occurred over unpopulated zones, preventing harm to residents and infrastructure, according to the agency.
The latest attack fits within a pattern of escalations between Iran and the United States that has repeatedly placed Jordanian territory in the line of fire. US Central Command previously detailed American strikes on Iranian vessels that followed two unsuccessful Iranian ballistic missile attempts against a US Navy warship, according to official releases. Jordan has consistently responded to such incursions by activating layered air defenses supported by the Royal Jordanian Air Force.
The Jordanian Armed Forces reiterated in its statement that it would continue to safeguard national airspace and respond to any threats in line with established rules of engagement. Officials have not disclosed technical details about the specific systems used in the September 8 interceptions. The military emphasized its commitment to preserving the security and sovereignty of the kingdom amid evolving regional conditions.
