Burgan Club Appoints Al-Mousawi as Handball Coach Ahead of World Championship Debut

Burgan Club appointed Yaqoub Al-Mousawi as head coach of its handball team for the 2026-27 season, Arab Times reported on July 5. The appointment follows the club’s historic triumph in the Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship last month, where it won the title in its first appearance at the competition by defeating Saudi Arabia’s Khaleej Club in extra time. Al-Mousawi previously coached Burgan before regional issues cut short his tenure, and the club aims to sustain that momentum into domestic and international campaigns.

According to the report, squad preparations will commence in late July under Al-Mousawi, who will collaborate with the handball department to finalize a comprehensive technical and physical training program. An overseas training camp is set for early September, although the destination has yet to be confirmed. The club is also evaluating its roster needs and studying profiles of potential local and foreign reinforcements to bolster its chances of challenging for multiple titles.

The International Handball Federation detailed that Burgan’s victory over Khaleej secured its qualification as Asia’s representative to the 2026 IHF Men’s Club World Championship scheduled for Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 in Egypt. This marks the fourth time a Kuwaiti side has featured in the tournament after Al-Salmiya in 2002, Al-Qadsiya in 2007 and Al-Kuwait in 2022 and 2023. Burgan’s Mohsen Mahmoud topped the scoring charts at the Asian event with 61 goals.

Yaqoub Al-Mousawi had most recently coached Al-Salmiya, from which he resigned in October 2025, the Arab Times previously reported. He had also commented on the challenges facing the Kuwait national team ahead of world championship qualifications, according to the Kuwait News Agency. His return to Burgan emphasizes continuity within the squad that achieved the breakthrough continental success.

The world championship will take place in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital with nine teams competing from six confederations at the New Capital Sports Hall, the International Handball Federation said. Burgan will face strong opposition including host representatives and top clubs from other continents. The competition offers a platform for the Kuwaiti side to build on its recent continental form.

The International Handball Federation has recognized multiple Kuwaiti clubs as past participants in the Club World Championship, underscoring the country’s strong handball tradition in Asia. Burgan, founded in 2007, has quickly risen to claim its maiden Asian title and now looks to make an impact on the global stage with Al-Mousawi guiding the team. The club plays its home matches at Al-Masayel Hall, which is known for generating an intense atmosphere.
