Iran Downs Two U.S. Warplanes and Israel Strikes Bridges in Lebanon Amid Rejection of Trump Ultimatum

On April 4, 2026, Iran downed two U.S. fighter jets while Israel bombed bridges in Lebanon resulting in at least 15 deaths according to reports from The Guardian newspaper. Tehran rejected the ultimatum issued by President Donald Trump and described it as ‘impotent and nervous’ according to Al Jazeera’s blog. This comes within an ongoing war for weeks that has led to significant losses in the region.

Al Jazeera’s blog reported that the two planes were downed in separate incidents inside Iran. U.S. sources reported the rescue of one crew member in a nighttime operation while the other remains missing according to an Associated Press report. The reports indicated that Israel assisted in some rescue operations. Iran confirmed its attempt to seize the crew for intelligence purposes.

In Lebanon, the Israeli raids on the bridges led to the killing of at least eight people including civilians as reported by Al Jazeera. Lebanese officials said the bridges were used for civilian and humanitarian purposes. Israeli sources explained that the objective was to cut off Hezbollah supply routes. They added that the strikes came in response to previous rocket attacks.

According to compiled media reports, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 people in Lebanon since last March. A United Nations report indicated that civilians were significantly affected. Reuters reported that Iran demanded an end to the fighting on all fronts including Lebanon as part of any peace agreement. It confirmed that its position includes demands for compensation.

The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the response to the American ultimatum was calculated and rejects the pressures. He said in a statement to the media that Iran will not accept any dictates. Associated Press reported that Trump rejected the Iranian proposal and described it as ‘completely unacceptable’. He added that negotiations may continue through mediators.

Diplomatic efforts continued despite the military escalation with a prominent role for Pakistan in the mediation as reported by France 24. Reports indicated that a temporary ceasefire was proposed for two weeks but Iran conditioned it on guarantees of no recurrence. The sources confirmed that the conflict affected global oil prices and the security of navigation in the region.
