The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed its women’s team declined to receive the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi after their final victory. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia attributed the position to solidarity with the men’s team that adopted the same approach in 2025. The presentation ceremony was delayed nearly an hour as a result before Naqvi handed over only the runners-up prizes to Sri Lanka and left the venue.
India achieved the win by chasing Sri Lanka’s total with significant overs to spare in the summit clash at Dubai International Stadium according to tournament records. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side remained unbeaten through the competition and had earlier beaten Pakistan by 10 wickets in the group phase. Coach Amol Muzumdar described all their matches as one-sided and cited the outcome as proof of advancing standards in Indian women’s cricket.
Saikia told Indian media outlets that the decision followed the April 2025 Pahalgam incident which shifted dynamics with Pakistan. «The Women’s team has expressed solidarity with the decision taken by the men’s team last year,» Saikia said. He added that the choice did not reduce the value of the team’s unbeaten run through the event.
The episode repeated the sequence from the men’s Asia Cup final in 2025 when India similarly refused the trophy from Naqvi who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board. That trophy has not yet been delivered to the BCCI despite follow-up efforts Saikia noted across several interviews. The board plans to address the issue formally at the next ICC conference.
Muzumdar backed the board’s approach during his post-match news conference. «That stand has been taken by BCCI and we stand by it,» he said. «For us this tournament is over we are the champions. That’s good enough. It was on the big board that India are the champions of Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us. We’re happy that we’re the champions and we look forward to the Asian Games.»
ACC officials received prior notification of the BCCI stance a source disclosed to The Indian Express. The Indian squad conducted separate celebrations that included a mock trophy lift outside their dressing room according to images circulated from the event. The sequence has drawn renewed attention to the intersection of sports and regional politics in South Asia.
