Arsene Wenger stated that FIFA will analyse data on the hydration breaks implemented throughout the 2026 World Cup once the competition concludes. The FIFA chief of global football development made his comments at the final press conference of the Technical Study Group held in New Jersey. He explained that the breaks had been applied uniformly across all matches to prevent any differences between games and ensure fairness for competing teams.
Wenger indicated that the review would examine whether the pauses had any measurable effect on the flow or outcomes of fixtures. The assessment is set to draw on comprehensive match data collected by FIFA during the tournament spanning the United States, Canada and Mexico. This process forms part of broader efforts to evaluate player welfare protocols introduced for the event.
«We will analyse it after the World Cup,» Wenger said according to the Arab Times. «I did not feel that these breaks changed the results of the tournament.» He pointed to the overall standard of play maintained despite the additional stoppages.
«I believe we have witnessed games of a very high level here,» Wenger added in the same briefing covered by the Arab Times. The introduction of hydration breaks had drawn criticism from several coaches during the tournament. Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa argued that the measure adds nothing and takes a lot away from matches.
The 2026 World Cup schedule created logistical demands by spreading fixtures across three host nations in the North American summer period. Wenger’s observations suggested that the quality of football had not suffered as a result of the hydration protocol or other operational factors. FIFA first brought in such breaks on a wider scale for the 2022 tournament in Qatar where extreme heat required additional safeguards for players.
Medical assessments tied to prior FIFA events have shown that hydration opportunities can reduce risks associated with high temperatures during elite competition. The governing body’s upcoming review will help determine the protocol’s future application in world cups and other tournaments. Wenger’s remarks underscored that the measure had not compromised the competitive integrity of the 2026 edition.
